Camp Widjiwagan, YMCA summer camp at Burntside Lake, Minnesota.
Camp Widjiwagan is a YMCA summer camp on Burntside Lake in northern Minnesota, sitting at the edge of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Programs are built around wilderness canoe trips and backpacking routes across North America, designed for young people.
The camp opened in 1929 as a boys wilderness program run by the YMCA. Girls were welcomed starting in 1947, broadening who the camp was built for.
The name "Widjiwagan" comes from the Ojibwe language and means something like "traveling companion." This idea shapes how the camp works, with groups spending days paddling, cooking, and sleeping outdoors together.
The camp sits in a remote lake and forest region, so some basic outdoor experience is helpful before joining adventure programs. All activities take place outside in natural conditions, and families should check program requirements before planning a visit.
In winter, the site becomes a place where participants learn to read animal tracks in the snow and explore the same routes they would paddle in summer, now on snowshoes or skis. The landscape looks and feels completely different under snow, offering a second way to know the same place.
