Quetico Provincial Park, Nature reserve in Rainy River District, Canada.
Quetico is a provincial park in the Rainy River District of Ontario, spreading across a huge area with hundreds of lakes. Rivers and narrow portage trails link the water surfaces, and thick forest covers the rocky shores and islands.
The Ontario government created a forest reserve here in the early 20th century, which later became a provincial park. The region remained protected mainly as a wilderness area where paddling and camping are allowed.
Rock paintings along the shorelines show canoes and animals left by travelers centuries ago. Some lakes carry names from the time when Ojibwe people fished here and built routes between the waters.
Access is through three ranger stations at different entry points, with all visitors needing permits for camping stays. Most routes through the area run over water with short overland sections for carrying boats between lakes.
The rock beneath the water and forests is among the oldest on Earth, dating back to Precambrian times. A water divide runs through the region, directing rivers north toward Hudson Bay.
