Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge, Nature reserve in Tucker County, West Virginia, US.
The 16,613-acre refuge encompasses wetlands, forests, and grasslands at 3,200 feet elevation within the Allegheny Mountains of West Virginia.
Established in 1994 as the 500th National Wildlife Refuge after environmental groups successfully prevented a hydroelectric project that threatened the valley.
The refuge provides environmental education programs and research opportunities focused on wildlife conservation and habitat preservation for local communities.
Visitors can explore 31 miles of designated trails for hiking, cycling, and horseback riding, with the visitor center operating Wednesday through Saturday.
The refuge contains the largest wetland system in West Virginia, supporting northern species due to its high elevation climate conditions.
