Roaring Plains West Wilderness

Roaring Plains West Wilderness is a large protected area within Monongahela National Forest featuring steep terrain, open grassy highlands, and dense woodland. The land is crossed by numerous mountain streams and creeks that flow through the varied landscape.

The area received its protected status in the 1980s as part of federal wilderness legislation, securing a large section of undeveloped forest. This designation recognized the ecological value of the region and prohibited modern development within its boundaries.

The wilderness maintains its natural state without modern development, allowing visitors to experience the landscape as early settlers encountered it centuries ago.

Access to the area comes from several hiking trails that begin from forest roads, but visitors should carry maps and navigation tools for orientation. Trails lack consistent markings throughout, so self-reliance and preparation are important.

The higher plateaus offer views of the Milky Way on clear nights and nearby mountain formations. These rare nighttime conditions make the location special for those interested in stargazing.
