Seneca Caverns

Seneca Caverns is an underground network carved into limestone with multiple chambers of varying sizes. The most impressive room is Teter Hall, which features towering walls and an expansive ceiling overhead.

The first documented visit occurred in 1781 when a clergyman explored the cave system. This early expedition marked the beginning of its recorded history.

German-American settlers shaped the property starting in the 1770s, influencing how European families developed this part of West Virginia. You can sense this heritage in how the land has been maintained and used over generations.

The interior remains cool and damp year-round, so plan to wear appropriate layers. Good walking shoes with grip are important since the paths are rocky and sometimes slippery underfoot.

An underground river called Ole Mistry River flows through the lower levels of the system. This flowing water carved out many of the chambers that visitors see today over countless years.
