Carl's Ice Cream

Carl's Ice Cream is an ice cream shop in a white building with curved lines and horizontal bands located on Princess Anne Street. The shop has been making frozen custard since 1947 and serves it fresh to customers each day.

The shop opened in 1947 and its Streamline Moderne design eventually led to recognition as a Virginia Historic Landmark. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005 because of its architectural and historical importance.

The shop keeps its original way of making frozen custard using equipment from the 1940s that still works today. Visitors can watch how the vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry flavors are prepared using these traditional machines.

The shop only accepts cash payments and opens from February through November each year. Plan to visit during warmer months when the shop is operating its regular schedule.

The frozen custard is made with eggs in the base mixture, which sets it apart from regular ice cream found elsewhere. This ingredient choice creates a richer and creamier product than standard ice cream.
