Center for Advanced Judaic Studies, Postdoctoral research center focused on Judaism

The Katz Center for Advanced Judaic Studies is a research institute within the University of Pennsylvania dedicated to examining Jewish history, texts, cultures, and experiences across different time periods and regions worldwide. It maintains a Judaica library with rare materials, publishes the Jewish Quarterly Review, and operates fellowship and exchange programs for scholars.

The center is built on more than 110 years of history, beginning with Dropsie College, the first modern institution in the United States dedicated to Jewish studies. When the Katz Center joined the University of Pennsylvania, it united this established research tradition with the resources of a major university, solidifying its presence in American academic life.

The center is named after patron Herbert D. Katz and serves as a gathering point where scholars from different fields exchange ideas and work together. Visitors notice how the institution creates spaces for dialogue across academic disciplines while connecting historical Jewish traditions with contemporary research approaches.

Visitors can access a specialized Judaica library housing rare books and historical materials, with many resources now available online. The institution extends beyond its physical campus through a mobile classroom program and digital initiatives, allowing people everywhere to benefit from its collections and research.

The center hosts the Jewish Quarterly Review, a respected academic journal that has long stood at the forefront of Judaistic scholarship. This publication unites the work of established scholars with emerging perspectives, making it a notable resource for those following the evolving study of Jewish cultures.
