Cedar-Riverside, Multicultural neighborhood in Minneapolis, United States
Cedar-Riverside is a neighborhood in Minneapolis extending from the Mississippi River to Interstate 94, with mixed residential buildings and local shops lining Cedar Avenue. The area combines older structures with newer developments, showing how the district has evolved over time.
Development began in 1849 when Scandinavian immigrants established communities and businesses along Cedar Avenue. Later waves of migrants from other regions transformed the neighborhood into the diverse place it is today.
Theaters, music venues, and restaurants throughout the neighborhood serve global cuisines and host local artists from many backgrounds. Walking through, you see how this mix of cultures shapes daily life and creates spaces where different communities gather.
Several bus routes and a light rail line connect the neighborhood to downtown Minneapolis and the University of Minnesota campus. The best time to explore is during the day when shops and restaurants are open and streets feel more active.
Riverside Plaza, designed by Ralph Rapson in 1973, stands out for its colorful exterior panels covering the building's facade. The residential complex houses residents from many countries and represents an early example of thoughtful apartment design from that era.
