Rarig Center, Brutalist theater center at University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, US.
Rarig Center is a brutalist theater facility at the University of Minnesota. The building contains four distinct performance spaces: a thrust stage, a proscenium theater, an arena theater, and a black box theater housed within its concrete structure.
Ralph Rapson designed this educational facility in 1971, drawing inspiration from Le Corbusier's architectural principles for the University of Minnesota campus. The building emerged during an era when brutalism was favored as a means to create functional, durable structures at American universities.
The center houses Radio K studios and supports theater education through specialized workshops, productions, and performances throughout the academic year. Visitors can experience the living connection between broadcasting and the performing arts here.
The building offers access through multiple entrances, including a tunnel connection from the east side and adaptations for mobility requirements. The various theaters are easy to reach and the layout allows for simple navigation between spaces.
The Stoll Thrust Theatre replicates the original Guthrie Theater at quarter scale and provides seating for approximately 460 spectators. This miniature version allows students to learn in an authentic setting without traveling to the original venue.
