University of Minnesota Armory, Military training building on Church Street, Minneapolis, United States.
The University of Minnesota Armory is a three-story sandstone building in Romanesque style on the university campus in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It features tower elements and arched openings that give it the look of a fortified structure, and it currently houses classrooms and offices for several ROTC units.
The building went up in 1896 after a fire destroyed the previous training facility on the site. It also served as a basketball court for the Minnesota Golden Gophers until a new arena opened in 1925.
The building honors students who served in early conflicts and shows how important military training was to the university. You can sense this connection to the past as you move through the spaces.
The main entrance on the south side of the building is accessible by ramp and elevator, so all floors can be reached without stairs. Most visitor areas are on the ground floor, which makes finding your way around straightforward.
After a football game in 1903, a University of Michigan coach accidentally left a small brown jug in the locker rooms here. That forgotten jug became the traveling trophy for the annual game between Michigan and Minnesota, now known as the Little Brown Jug.
