Oak Street Cinema, Art Deco movie theater in Stadium Village, Minneapolis, United States
Oak Street Cinema was a movie theater with Art Deco architectural elements located in Stadium Village, housing a single-screen auditorium with 312 seats. The space maintained this original single-screen setup throughout its entire period of operation.
The theater opened in 1916 as the Oak Theatre and was renovated in 1935 to become the Campus Theatre before closing in 2010. The building was demolished the following year.
The cinema drew audiences with its programming of independent films, foreign productions, and classic movies, regularly showing works by directors like Ingmar Bergman and Akira Kurosawa. It served as a gathering place for film enthusiasts in the local student community.
The cinema was situated near the University of Minnesota campus on Oak Street SE, making it accessible to the student community. Visitors should have been aware of its vintage building condition, which shaped the overall theater experience.
Notable filmmakers including Terry Gilliam, Michael Moore, and Peter Fonda made personal appearances at the theater. These visits made it a place where film enthusiasts could encounter the people behind cinema.
