Coast Guard Aviation Station Ten Pound Island

Coast Guard Aviation Station Ten Pound Island, Coast Guard air station on Ten Pound Island, Massachusetts, US.

Coast Guard Aviation Station Ten Pound Island was an air base on a small island off Gloucester Harbor in Massachusetts, built to operate seaplanes. The facility had a specialized launching ramp and maintenance buildings designed to keep aircraft ready for patrol and rescue work.

The base opened in 1925 when Prohibition created demand for coastal patrols to stop alcohol smuggling along the northeastern shore. It closed in 1935 after larger seaplane models made the small island impractical as a base for future operations.

The station showed how aviation and coastal rescue became linked in early 20th-century America. Visitors can grasp how such facilities shaped the way communities thought about water safety and emergency response.

The site sits on a small island off Gloucester's coast and is visible from the water, but not generally open to visitors. To understand the historical location, view it from the shore or pass by it on a boat near the harbor.

The station operated several types of seaplanes, including Vought UO-1 and UO-4 models, aircraft rarely remembered today. These older plane types help explain how early rescue flights actually worked from remote coastal bases.
