Cofrin Memorial Arboretum, Botanical garden in Green Bay, Wisconsin, United States
Cofrin Memorial Arboretum is a botanical garden located on the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay campus, covering numerous acres filled with a diverse collection of trees and plants from the region. The space is divided into distinct habitats including prairies, woodlands, wetlands, and rocky areas, each supporting different species of trees, shrubs, wildflowers, and wildlife.
The arboretum was established in the 1980s from the vision of faculty and staff seeking to preserve natural land around the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. A major family donation made it possible to construct trails, plant extensive collections, and develop the landscape features visitors encounter today.
The arboretum serves as an outdoor classroom where students and visitors come together to learn about plants and local ecosystems. It functions as a community gathering space where people enjoy quiet moments in nature and develop a deeper connection to the environment.
The site is open to the public year-round with no entrance fee, offering nearby parking and trails accessible to visitors of varying mobility levels. Over seven miles of paths wind through the landscape, and visiting during spring or fall provides the most vibrant experience with blooming wildflowers and autumn color changes.
Sections of the arboretum are being restored to resemble their historic appearance, particularly a hilltop oak savanna being reclaimed from former farmland. These restoration efforts involve planting native grasses and trees while removing invasive species, helping to bring back landscapes from the distant past.
