Crow's Nest Natural Area Preserve, Protected natural area in Stafford County, United States.
Crow's Nest Natural Area Preserve is a protected area in Stafford County, Virginia, made up of mixed hardwood forests, tidal wetlands, and ravines cut by two creeks. The land sits along the Potomac River, with ridges dropping roughly 160 feet (49 meters) in places above the water below.
People have lived on this land for thousands of years, and layers of soil have yielded tools and pottery that trace a long chain of occupation. In more recent centuries, the land was used for farming before eventually being set aside as a preserve.
The land was once the heart of Patawomeck territory, a people who hunted, fished, and farmed along these shores. Stone tools and pottery fragments found here give a tangible sense of how daily life once unfolded in this place.
The preserve has several entry points with parking and connections to trails and water access areas along the river. Terrain is uneven and can be wet, particularly near the ravines and wetlands, so sturdy footwear makes the visit more comfortable.
Despite sitting close to one of the most developed stretches of the Potomac River, this preserve contains one of the few remaining undisturbed tributary streams in the area. That makes it a refuge for species that have largely disappeared from other nearby stretches of the river.
