Cooper Library in Johnson Park
Cooper Library in Johnson Park, National Register of Historic Places library in Camden, US
Cooper Library is a Neoclassical building with symmetrical wings, prominent columns, and a grand entrance facing Johnson Park. The structure showcases Classical Revival details with carefully balanced proportions throughout.
The building was constructed in 1916 as a library reflecting the educational aspirations of that era. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980 due to its architectural and educational importance.
The building displays a large mosaic on its front showing nations exchanging resources and knowledge. Visitors can observe this colorful glass artwork that decorates the main facade.
The building is now managed by Rutgers University Camden and operates as a Digital Studies Center and Writing Lab. Check ahead to see which areas are open to the public for visits.
The mosaic on the facade was created by D'Ascenzo Studios, a specialized workshop with notable commissions elsewhere. The artwork consists of roughly 100,000 individual pieces of colored glass.
