Barnegat

Barnegat is a lightvessel with a red steel hull and white superstructure that once guided ships off the New Jersey coast. The vessel now rests at Pyne Poynt Marina and displays the sturdy construction typical of working ships from the early 1900s.

This lightship began operating in 1904 to guide vessels along the New Jersey coast with its light signal. It was retired in 1967 when electronic navigation systems made floating lighthouses no longer necessary.

This vessel represents how Americans once guided ships safely along their coast using floating lighthouses instead of fixed structures. The red hull was designed to be easily spotted by ship captains navigating at night or in poor visibility.

The vessel is located at Pyne Poynt Marina in Camden and can be viewed from the surrounding area. Since restoration work is ongoing, it is best to check ahead for viewing conditions and accessibility before visiting.

During World War II, the ship took on a security role and inspected cargo vessels before allowing them to enter Delaware Bay. This wartime duty shows how civilian ships were adapted to serve national defense needs.
