Camden, County seat on Delaware River in New Jersey, United States.

Description

Camden is a county seat on the eastern bank of the Delaware River in New Jersey, directly across from Philadelphia. Several bridges connect the city to Pennsylvania, and the Philadelphia skyline remains visible from the waterfront, giving visitors a clear sense of proximity between the two cities.

History

William Cooper founded the first permanent European settlement at Pyne Point in 1681, establishing the area as a river crossing. The city later grew into an industrial center before shifting toward education and healthcare institutions in the late twentieth century.

Culture

Families from across the region visit the waterfront attractions, where the Adventure Aquarium and Battleship New Jersey Museum draw crowds throughout the year. The boardwalk along the river becomes a gathering spot on weekends, with people walking, sitting on benches, and watching boats pass between the two states.

Practical

The PATCO Speedline and RiverLine offer regular transit connections between Camden and Philadelphia, with stops across the downtown area. Visitors can easily move between both sides of the river, accessing Camden waterfront attractions and Philadelphia downtown without needing a car.

Did you know?

The Adventure Aquarium features the longest shark bridge in North America, allowing visitors to walk above a 550,000 gallon (2 million liter) shark tank. Less known is that the city once housed Campbell's Soup Company, whose cans became famous worldwide through Andy Warhol's paintings in the 1960s.
