Camden City Hall, Neoclassical skyscraper in Camden, United States
Description
Camden City Hall is a neoclassical skyscraper featuring a slender tower rising from a broad base of light gray granite. The eighteen-story structure houses the administrative offices for both the City of Camden and Camden County.
History
The building was completed in 1931 and replaced the original city hall from 1876 that stood at the corner of Benson Street and Haddon Avenue. This construction marked a modernization of the city's administrative infrastructure in the early twentieth century.
Culture
The south side displays an engraving from Walt Whitman's poem, while the front features quotes from Shakespeare and the King James Bible.
Practical
The building is located on Market Street and is easily accessible with clear entrance signage. While visitors can view the architecture from the street, access to the interior is limited to official business hours.
Did you know?
The structure was long the tallest building in the Philadelphia metropolitan area outside of Philadelphia proper. This distinction makes it a notable reference point for the region's architectural history beyond city boundaries.
