Statue of Christopher Columbus, Bronze monument in Farnham Park, United States
The Statue of Christopher Columbus is a bronze figure that stood in Farnham Park and depicted the navigator at full height with one arm extended forward and navigation tools in the other hand. The sculpture was positioned at the intersection of Park Boulevard and Baird Boulevard and served as a notable landmark in the park.
The statue was installed in Camden in 1915 and remained part of the city's landscape for nearly 105 years. It was removed in 2020 as discussions about the portrayal of colonial history in public spaces gained prominence.
The monument generated varied responses from Italian American organizations and local residents regarding the representation of colonial history in public spaces.
The statue was originally located at the intersection of Park Boulevard and Baird Boulevard in the park and was easily accessible on foot. Since its removal in 2020, visitors today can only see the vacant spot where it once stood.
During its dismantling in June 2020, the statue rolled off a transport truck and sustained damage, with its head becoming separated from the rest of the figure. This mishap documented the tumultuous process of removing monuments from urban spaces.
