Creedmoor Psychiatric Center, Psychiatric hospital in Queens Village, New York, United States.
Creedmoor Psychiatric Center is a psychiatric hospital in Queens Village, in the borough of Queens, New York City. The site covers more than 300 acres with old stone walls, abandoned buildings, and quiet green fields that reflect the long history of the place.
The site was once a farm owned by the Creed family and turned into a firing range in the 1870s. The hospital opened in 1912 by the state of New York and grew through the late 1950s, when it cared for thousands of patients.
The grounds received their name from the Creed family and British visitors who called the open land "Creed's Moor". Today, this name recalls the past as a firing range and later as a facility that housed thousands of residents.
The center is easily reached by car and sits in a quiet area with tree-lined streets. Some old buildings are empty and cannot be visited, while others remain in active use.
In August 2023, the grounds became a shelter for arriving migrants in New York City. This use shows how the site has shifted from a treatment facility to a place for urgent social needs.
