Detroit Cristo Rey High School is a secondary school in the West Vernor-Junction neighborhood serving students in grades 9 through 12 who combine classroom learning with paid work experience at local businesses. Students spend one day each week in entry-level corporate positions while attending classes the remaining weekdays.
The school was founded in 2008 starting with approximately 100 ninth-grade students under the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Detroit. It followed an educational model designed to make secondary education accessible to students from families with limited means through paid work opportunities.
Students from all religious backgrounds participate in morning prayers, theology classes, and complete 40 hours of community service during their education.
The school is accessible by public transportation or on foot from downtown Detroit, as the West Vernor-Junction neighborhood is connected to the city's transit network. Keep in mind this is an active school campus with standard school hours.
The school works with about 35 different employers across the Detroit area, giving each student exposure to various career fields and work environments. This broad network of partnerships means students gain hands-on experience in areas aligned with their individual interests.
