St. Boniface Roman Catholic Church
St. Boniface Roman Catholic Church, Romanesque Revival church in Detroit, United States
St. Boniface was a Catholic church in Romanesque Revival style located on Vermont Avenue, distinguished by a square bell tower topped with an octagonal metal roof. Heavy buttresses supported the red brick walls, and a two-story Italianate rectory stood adjacent to the church building.
The church was founded in 1867 and completed in 1883 to serve the growing German immigrant community. It played an important role in the neighborhood until its closure in 1989.
The church reflected the heritage of the German community that had settled in this neighborhood. The name and architectural style showed the strong connection residents maintained to their homeland and faith.
The building no longer stands as it was demolished in 1996. Visitors today can explore the history of the site only through historical records and photographs.
Although the church was demolished in 1996, it remained registered as a historic landmark on the National Register until 2022. This registration reflects the importance communities placed on preserving the memory of such significant neighborhood structures.
