Devil's Backbone, Rock formation in Highland County, Virginia.

Devil's Backbone is a sandstone ridge in Highland County, Virginia, rising sharply from the surrounding mountain slopes. It runs in a long, narrow line along the ridgeline, standing out as a vertical rock formation against the open sky.

Early settlers named the formation because its jagged, raised line reminded them of the spine of a large creature. The name passed onto regional maps and has stayed unchanged ever since.

The name Devil's Backbone reflects a common naming tradition in the Appalachian region, where settlers gave dramatic nicknames to natural features they found striking. Locals still use the name casually today, and it appears on regional maps and trail signs without any religious or symbolic meaning attached to it.

The formation is reachable by foot along hiking trails that do not require any technical skill, though sturdy footwear is a good idea given the rocky ground. Weather in Highland County can shift fast, so checking the forecast before heading out is always worth doing.

The sandstone at this site shows clear horizontal banding that formed when layers of sediment were compressed at the bottom of an ancient sea, long before this part of Virginia became dry land. When you get close, the rock looks almost like pages stacked in a book.
