Dunbar Hospital, hospital in Michigan, United States

Dunbar Hospital is a former hospital in Detroit built specifically for Black patients, housed in a three-story brick building featuring Romanesque Revival architecture. The structure displays craftwork details including rounded arches, stonework, and balcony elements typical of late 19th-century design.

Built in 1892 as a private residence for real estate developer Charles W. Warren, the building was converted into a hospital in 1918 by Black physicians of the Allied Medical Society. After relocating to a larger facility in 1928, it served as a residence for politician Charles C. Diggs Sr. and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

The building is named after poet Paul Laurence Dunbar, reflecting the connection between literature and civil rights in the African American community. Today it serves as headquarters for the Detroit Medical Society, continuing to embody community leadership and historical memory.

The building is located near the Detroit Cultural Center and accessible by nearby major roads, making it easy to find. Since it now serves as office and museum space, visitors should check opening hours and guidelines before visiting to plan their trip accordingly.

The hospital was named after poet Paul Laurence Dunbar, who died just years before its founding and advocated for civil rights. This choice linked medical care with literary and political history, reflecting the values of the Black physicians who established it.
