Edgewood Yacht Club, historic yacht club in Cranston, Rhode Island
The Edgewood Yacht Club is a sailing club in Cranston, Rhode Island, situated by the water with both historic buildings and modern sailing facilities. The clubhouse features large windows overlooking the water, a small dock for boat moorings, a bar, and meeting spaces where members gather for social events and races.
The club was founded in 1889, and its original building was constructed in 1908 using the Shingle Style, a classic American design with wooden shingles on the exterior. Following fires and major storms over its history, including hurricanes in 1938 and 1954, the clubhouse was rebuilt between 2016 and 2018 after a lightning-caused fire in 2011.
The Edgewood Yacht Club takes its name from the Edgewood neighborhood in Cranston and has long served as a gathering place where boat owners and sailing enthusiasts build friendships around their shared passion for the water. Families come here to celebrate and spend time together, making it a community hub where connections form naturally.
The clubhouse and docks are easily reached from downtown Cranston, with the waterfront layout providing straightforward access to boat slips. Visitors should note that summer is the best time for watching sailing events, while boat access is available throughout the year.
The clubhouse was completely destroyed by a lightning-caused fire in 2011, but the club rebuilt it from 2016 to 2018, showing the community's resilience. The new structure includes the Ted Turner Sailing Pavilion, connected to Brown University and serving as a sailing education center alongside its historic purpose.
