English Station, Industrial power plant in New Haven, United States
English Station is an abandoned thermal power plant that spans eight acres on Ball Island in the Mill River, situated between the Wooster Square and Fair Haven neighborhoods. The facility was designed to burn coal and oil to generate electricity.
Construction of the power plant began in 1924 and it operated until 1991, generating electricity for United Illuminating Company. Its long operational span made it a key energy source for the region over several decades.
The facility represents the industrial heritage of Connecticut and shows how large thermal power stations once supplied the region's growing energy needs. It stands as a reminder of when such plants shaped the city's economic life.
The site is currently not open to visitors as it undergoes extensive cleanup due to contamination from asbestos and PCB. Access remains restricted due to safety and environmental protection concerns.
The site has remained unused since its closure in 1991 despite several ownership changes and redevelopment proposals. The remediation challenges have repeatedly delayed or prevented any efforts to repurpose it.
