Abulkasym Madrassah

The Abdul-Kassim-Medrese is an Islamic educational building in Chilanzar that features a two-story structure with traditional architectural design. The building contains a rectangular courtyard surrounded by student dormitories decorated with carved wooden lattice screens called pandjars.

The medrese was built in the 16th century and served as an important site for political negotiations during regional conflicts. In the 19th century, the building was expanded with an additional floor, changing its original single-story form.

The building houses active workshops where artisans create traditional Uzbek miniature paintings and wooden crafts using time-honored techniques. Visitors can observe how these craftspeople work and learn about their artistic practices.

The building is easily accessible and located in a residential neighborhood that can be explored on foot. The workshops inside are usually open to visitors who wish to observe the artisans at work.

The building served as the site of peace negotiations that followed the capture of Tashkent, giving it special historical importance. This fact is often overlooked by visitors, yet it shows how educational spaces also became places for political decisions.
