Karshi-Khanabad Air Base, Wikimedia disambiguation page
Karshi-Khanabad Air Base is a military airfield near Qarshi situated on flat desert terrain with extensive concrete runways and functional buildings spread across open land. The facility stands at approximately 416 meters (1365 feet) in elevation and features large hangars and operations areas designed to accommodate heavy transport aircraft and fighter jets.
The base began as a Soviet Air Defense facility during the Cold War, hosting fighter jets like MiG-15s and Sukhoi aircraft. After Uzbekistan's independence in the 1990s, control transferred to the Uzbek Air Force, and later U.S. military forces used it from 2001 to 2005 to support operations in Afghanistan.
The base sits in a hot, dry desert region with intense sun and little natural shelter, so bring light clothing and plenty of water for any visit. The flat surroundings offer wide views across the landscape, but few shaded areas or vegetation to rest under during the day.
Buried beneath the facility are chemicals and radioactive materials left from the Soviet era, including processed uranium and jet fuel, some of which seep into nearby water sources. Veterans stationed there have reported long-term health problems, with suspected links to exposure of these contaminants.
