Chuao, Agricultural village in Aragua, Venezuela
Chuao is a village on the Caribbean coast of Aragua, nestled between the sea and forested mountains of Henri Pittier National Park. The settlement sits on fertile land surrounded by rainforest that has long been devoted to cocoa farming.
Cocoa production started here in the 16th century, and Spanish colonial administration established the formal settlement in the 17th century. This long tradition fundamentally shaped the place's economy and identity.
The Farmer's Company of Chuao operates as a cooperative with 127 members managing the cocoa plantations and supporting community development projects.
The village is reachable only by boat from Puerto Colombia or via mountain trails from nearby Turmero, making arrival challenging. Visitors should plan around boat schedules and bring sturdy footwear for the paths.
The cocoa from this region received protected origin status in 2000 and enjoys international reputation for its quality. The local cooperative preserves traditional farming methods that differ markedly from industrial production.
