Vinh, Commercial city in North-Central Vietnam
Vinh sits on the Lam River and serves as capital of Nghe An Province with around 790,000 residents in 2024. Wide avenues and simple residential blocks shape the cityscape, interrupted by parks and public squares along the riverbank.
The settlement was rebuilt multiple times after heavy damage during the Indochina and Vietnam wars. Soviet planners influenced the new street grid and building forms during reconstruction.
The Lam River waterfront becomes a gathering spot for locals practicing Tai Chi at dawn or buying fresh produce at the market. Small noodle shops in the old quarter open their doors before sunrise.
The international airport offers regular flights from four main carriers, while the train station provides connections to other parts of the country. Many shops and restaurants close during the hot midday hours for a short break.
The nearby Pu Mat UNESCO biosphere reserve shelters rare mammals in a protected forest area. Visitors can join guided hikes through dense rainforest there.
