Hoàng Liên Sơn mountain range, Mountain range in Lai Châu, Vietnam.
The Hoàng Liên Sơn is a mountain range spanning roughly 180 kilometers across northwestern Vietnam with a width of about 30 kilometers. It features multiple peaks at varying elevations with diverse geological formations throughout.
The range formed during the Paleocene era and displays evidence of volcanic eruptions and geological intrusions across its stone surfaces. These steep formations reflect the powerful forces that shaped the landscape over millions of years.
The name comes from celandine plants that grow on the slopes throughout the range. Local Thai communities call these mountains Khau Pha, which translates to horn of heaven.
Multiple hiking trails are accessible from nearby towns, with accommodations ranging from homestays to the Heaven Gate Hotel at O Quy Ho. The cooler months make for easier access and more comfortable walking conditions on the trails.
Fansipan Peak, the highest point here at 3,142 meters, stands as the tallest mountain on the Indochinese Peninsula. Many visitors are unaware that this dramatic summit can be dusted with snow overnight, even during warmer months.
