Mocha, Port city in Ta'izz Governorate, Yemen
Mocha is a port city in Ta'izz Governorate, Yemen, stretching along the Red Sea coast at roughly 13 meters elevation. Traditional houses line the shore and face directly toward the water.
The city served as the main coffee trading port between the 15th and 17th centuries, linking the region to harbors around the world through shipping routes. This trade brought merchants from Europe, Asia and Africa to the Yemeni coast.
Fishermen work here using methods passed down through families for centuries and still practiced today. Their wooden boats anchor each day at the same spots along the coast.
Fish markets sit near the harbor and open early in the morning when boats return with their catch. The waterfront paths are easy to walk and provide direct access to the port.
The name of this town became a global term for a type of coffee, even though the beans originally came from inland regions. Traders simply labeled all coffee shipped through here after the port.
