Taplejung District, Administrative district in Eastern Nepal
Taplejung is an administrative district in eastern Nepal that spans diverse mountain terrain and river valleys. The landscape shifts from low-lying areas near river settlements to high ridges and alpine regions.
The region was originally ruled by Limbu Kings as part of the Limbuwan kingdom before being integrated into larger administrative units. It became a separate district in 1962 after being incorporated into Dhankuta.
The Limbu, Sherpa, and Rai communities shape daily life with their traditions and crafts throughout the region. Their languages and customs are woven into the fabric of local gatherings, markets, and celebrations.
The region is best explored during dry seasons when roads and mountain paths are more passable for walking or jeep travel. Local guides prove essential for navigating remote areas and understanding conditions before attempting any trek or journey.
The region protects the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area, a wilderness zone with snow-capped peaks and pristine mountain forests. Wildlife including red pandas, snow leopards, and Asian black bears roam these high-altitude habitats.
