Taplejung District, Administrative district in Eastern Nepal
The third largest district in Nepal, Taplejung spans 3,646 square kilometers between elevations of 670 meters to 8,586 meters above sea level.
Before becoming an independent district in 1962, Taplejung was part of the Dhankuta District and originally belonged to the Limbuwan region ruled by Limbu Kings.
The population includes Limbu, Sherpa, and Rai communities, with Limbu being the primary language spoken by 39.4 percent of district residents.
Visitors reach Taplejung via the Mechi Highway using public buses from Kathmandu or through flights landing at Taplejung Airport in Suketar.
The district contains the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area, which protects numerous species including red pandas, snow leopards, and Asian black bears.
