Belmond Reid's Palace

The palace sits on a cliff above the Atlantic on Madeira's coast. It contains accommodations, multiple swimming pools, and sprawling tropical gardens overlooking the ocean.

British architect Somers Clarke designed this luxury hotel, which opened in 1891 as a retreat for wealthy guests. The project came at a time when Madeira was becoming a popular winter destination for European travelers.

The building blends traditional Quinta-Madeirense features with British colonial style from the late 1800s. This mix appears in the stonework, verandas, and garden design that shape how guests experience the property.

The property sits on a hillside with paths adapted to the terrain and provides accessible routes to restaurants, gardens, and recreational areas. Comfortable shoes are helpful since exploring the entire grounds on foot is part of the visit.

Many rooms feature handcrafted Portuguese furniture selected specifically to tell a story through design. Each room has its own character and is completed by private balconies offering views toward the ocean or the gardens.
