The medieval fortification in Évora consists of stone walls that encircle the old city with several gates and towers positioned at strategic points. This structure extends across a substantial perimeter and marks the boundary between the historic center and the newer areas beyond.

The fortification began under King Dom Dinis in the 14th century and incorporated earlier Roman and Moorish structures from previous eras. The walls were later adapted to accommodate gunpowder weaponry and received reinforcements to meet new military needs.

The walls form part of Évora's identity and show how the city once protected itself during medieval times. Walking along them today, you can sense how central this defense was to the community's survival and daily life.

The walls are accessible throughout the year, and you can walk along the preserved sections to view both the city and surrounding landscape from different vantage points. The site is easiest to explore on foot from the old town, and most of the terrain is relatively level.

The walls visibly demonstrate how military architecture evolved over centuries and reflect different technological approaches to defense. You can observe how Roman foundations were combined with medieval additions and later modifications to accommodate cannon fire.
