Prislop Pass, Mountain pass at 1416 meters in Eastern Carpathians, Romania.
Prislop Pass is a mountain crossing in the Eastern Carpathians, at around 1,400 feet (1,400 m) elevation, connecting the historical regions of Maramures and Bukovina in Romania. National Road 18 runs through the pass on a fully paved surface, crossing forested slopes with open clearings on both sides.
The pass was first documented in Latin texts in the 1700s and has served as a crossing between the two historical regions ever since. Its role as a link between Maramures and Bukovina has stayed the same over the centuries.
The Roots Museum near the pass displays a collection of unusually shaped tree roots, military items from the world wars, and traditionally painted eggs. These objects give a concrete sense of local crafts and of the shared past of the communities on both sides of the crossing.
The crossing is easiest to make by car, since the road is paved and open throughout the year. Mountain conditions can change quickly in winter, so checking the weather before setting out is a good idea.
Every third Sunday in August, thousands of people gather at the pass for the Hora de la Prislop festival to celebrate traditional dances at this elevation. This gathering brings together communities from Maramures and Bukovina and is one of the few folk festivals held at this height in the Carpathians.
