Federation Island, Artificial archipelago project in Sochi, Russia
Federation Island was a planned artificial archipelago off the Black Sea coast near Sochi that was designed to replicate the outline of Russia itself. The project included plans for residential neighborhoods, hotels, and recreational facilities spread across several man-made islands.
The project was conceived in 2007 and received high-level backing, but construction never progressed beyond early phases before being abandoned. Work stopped in 2012, leaving the archipelago unfinished and unused in the shallow waters offshore.
The island was meant to serve as a gathering place where people could enjoy entertainment and spend time together in specially designed spaces. The layout included areas for different kinds of activities that would bring visitors and residents together throughout the year.
The site is not accessible to visitors today since the artificial islands remain unfinished and sit in shallow waters offshore. You can view the project from the shoreline or from a distance, but there is no way to visit the islands themselves.
The design was meant to recreate Russia's geographic shape across the waters, with each island representing a different region of the country. This bold concept of mapping an entire nation as islands in the sea was never completed, remaining an unfulfilled vision.
