Khanskoye Lake, Protected salt lake in Yeysky District, Russia.
Khanskoye Lake is a protected salt lake in Krasnodar Krai with a large surface area and shallow water throughout. The shoreline features open grassland and gentle slopes, while mineral-laden water creates an unusual environment where only salt-tolerant life thrives.
The lake formed through natural separation from the Sea of Azov as geological processes gradually isolated it from the larger body of water. This long separation allowed salt to concentrate and shaped the mineral composition we see today.
The name comes from accounts of a Crimean khan who visited these mineral-rich waters regularly. Today this name connects the place to the region's history of using natural salt waters for healing practices.
The lake is easiest to visit during warmer months when water levels are stable and shoreline paths are accessible. Wear sturdy footwear since terrain can be muddy in places and the ground is often uneven near the water's edge.
The water holds significantly more salt than the neighboring Sea of Azov, allowing only specialized organisms to survive that are found nowhere else in the region. This extreme saltiness makes swimming and floating feel noticeably different from typical seawater.
