Staraya Derevnya, metro station in Saint Petersburg, Russia
Staraya Derevnya is an underground metro station in the northwestern part of Saint Petersburg, serving the Pravoberezhnaya line. It sits in the neighborhood of the same name, close to the Krestovka River and the outer districts of the city.
The station opened in 1999, making it one of the more recent additions to the Saint Petersburg metro network. It was built to connect the growing residential areas in the northwestern outskirts to the rest of the city.
The name Staraya Derevnya means "Old Village" in Russian, recalling a settlement that once stood on this edge of the city. Today the station serves as a starting point for visitors heading to the Hermitage's storage and restoration center nearby.
The station is a terminus on its line, so trains begin and end their journey here, which makes boarding straightforward. Travelers heading into the city center can usually find a seat, since the train starts from this stop.
Near the station sits the Hermitage's open storage facility, where a large part of the museum's collection is kept outside the main Winter Palace buildings. Visitors can book guided tours to walk through the storage halls and see objects that never go on display in the main museum.
