Teatralnaya, Metro station in Admiralteysky District, Russia
Teatralnaya is an underground metro station in the Admiralty District of Saint Petersburg, built about 50 meters below street level with a central island platform and two tracks. It will have two entrances, one near the corner of Glinka and Dekabristov streets and one on Lermontovsky Prospect, close to the Mariinsky Theatre.
Work on the station started in 2016, using hand-dug methods suited to the soft ground beneath central Saint Petersburg. The project is part of a broader effort to extend the city's metro network into areas that have long relied on surface transport.
The station takes its name from Teatralnaya Ploshchad, the square where the Mariinsky Theatre stands. Once open, it will serve as the main arrival point for people coming to see opera, ballet, and other performances in the area.
The station is still under construction and not yet open to passengers, so check its current status before making plans in this area. Nearby open metro stations in the district can serve as alternatives while work continues.
Trains already pass through the finished tunnel section without stopping, just as they once did at Admiralteyskaya before that station opened to the public. This means the infrastructure exists but passengers cannot yet use it, a pattern that has appeared more than once in the history of the Saint Petersburg metro.
