Shavlinskie lakes, Mountain lakes in North-Chuya range, Gorny Altai, Russia.
Shavlinskie lakes form a chain of mountain water bodies in the North-Chuya range where glacial waters collect in high-altitude basins. Multiple interconnected lakes sit surrounded by rocky peaks and alpine meadows at an elevation exceeding 1300 meters.
These glacial basins were carved by ice sheets during the last ice age, leaving behind deep depressions in the mountains. When the glaciers retreated, meltwater filled the valleys and created the interconnected lakes visible today.
The lakes represent a significant natural landmark for indigenous Altai communities who maintain traditional practices in the surrounding mountains.
Reaching these lakes requires a multi-day mountain trek through demanding terrain with significant elevation gain. Summer months offer the most accessible conditions, though visitors should prepare for sudden weather changes in alpine areas.
The water surfaces reflect three mountain peaks known locally as Dream, Fairy Tale, and Beauty, creating shifting color reflections throughout the day. Each peak frames a different view from the lakes below, changing appearance as light moves across the sky.
