Jokkmokk Municipality

The municipality stretches across an extensive territory north of the Arctic Circle, encompassing four national parks and numerous rivers used for hydroelectric power.

Established in 1863, this municipality has maintained its original borders and received its coat of arms in 1971, featuring hydroelectric plant symbols and traditional Sami hammers.

The Jokkmokk Market, held during the first weekend of February since 1605, brings together traders, artists, and visitors for exhibitions, lectures, and traditional commerce.

The territory includes three main localities - Jokkmokk, Vuollerim, and Porjus - with additional settlements like the Sami reindeer herding camp at Udtja.

The Laponian area within the municipality serves as a protected UNESCO World Heritage Site, preserving the traditional lands of reindeer-herding Sami communities.
