The City Municipality of Ptuj encompasses 67 square kilometers of territory along the Drava River, incorporating the central town and surrounding villages.
The settlement originated as Poetovium, a Roman military fort in 69 AD, when Vespasian received support from Danubian legions for his imperial candidacy.
The municipality organizes the Kurent Carnival each spring, featuring participants in traditional sheep skin costumes performing ancient Slavic ceremonies.
The municipal administration, led by Mayor Nuška Gajšek, provides public services and governance for approximately 23,500 residents across multiple districts.
Ptuj Castle contains exhibitions of regional artifacts, positioned above the confluence of the Drava and Velin rivers at coordinates 46.42°N, 15.87°E.
