Ptuj Castle, Medieval fortress on hilltop in Ptuj, Slovenia
Ptuj Castle is a fortress on a hill above the Drava River in Ptuj, Slovenia, built with multiple wings, towers, and defensive walls from different periods. The complex overlooks the old town and the river and can be seen from much of the surrounding area.
The castle was established in the 12th century under the Salzburg Archdiocese as a defense against attacks from the east. Over the following centuries it changed hands and was rebuilt several times, gradually taking on the layered appearance it has today.
The castle houses the collections of the Ptuj-Ormož Regional Museum, including carnival masks still used during the Kurentovanje festival celebrated in the city. This festival takes place every February in the streets below the castle and is one of the most recognized winter events in Slovenia.
The climb to the castle starts from the old town of Ptuj along a steep path with steps, so sturdy shoes are a good idea. The castle is open daily, and guided tours are available in several languages.
Among the museum objects on display is a Roman double flute from the 2nd century known as a Tibia, used in religious ceremonies. This instrument is one of the few surviving examples of Roman wind instruments that can still be seen by the public today.
