The province spans 17,303 square kilometers of mountainous terrain, with dense forests, rivers, and numerous national parks bordering Myanmar to the west.

The region became an established settlement in 663 CE when Princess Jamadevi founded Ban Tak, which later integrated into the Sukhothai kingdom.

The province maintains a substantial population of hill tribes, including Karen, Akha, Lahu, Hmong, and Lisu peoples, representing 25 percent of local inhabitants.

The Thai-Burma Friendship Bridge in Mae Sot district functions as a primary trade route between Thailand and Myanmar, facilitating regional commerce.

Thungyai Naresuan Wildlife Sanctuary received UNESCO World Heritage status in 1991, protecting extensive natural habitats and rare species within its boundaries.
