Tak, Province in northern Thailand.

Tak is a province in northern Thailand bordering Myanmar, characterized by forested mountains, rivers, and several national parks. The region extends along the western frontier and includes remote valleys, limestone cliffs, and large connected forest areas.

In 663, Princess Jamadevi founded a settlement called Ban Tak that later became part of the Sukhothai kingdom. The location on trade routes between the plains of Thailand and the highlands of Myanmar shaped the development of the province over time.

The province maintains a substantial population of hill tribes, including Karen, Akha, Lahu, Hmong, and Lisu peoples, representing 25 percent of local inhabitants.

The Thai-Burma Friendship Bridge in Mae Sot district connects both countries and serves as a crossing point for trade and travel. Visitors will find both accessible areas along main roads and remote sections requiring four-wheel drive or motorbike transport throughout the province.

The Thungyai Naresuan Wildlife Sanctuary gained UNESCO World Heritage status in 1991 and protects rare species such as the Indochinese tiger and Asian elephant. The area remains largely uninhabited and offers habitat for wildlife that has disappeared elsewhere in the region.
