Mae Sot

Mae Sot is an administrative district in western Thailand that spans a large area divided into ten sub-districts with numerous communities. The district sits directly on the Myanmar border and functions as a trade hub connecting both countries.

The district was formally established as an administrative unit in 1939, formalizing a settlement that already existed. The construction of a major border bridge in the 1990s transformed the area into a key crossing point between the nations.

The Rim Moei Market is known for traders exchanging traditional jade and handicrafts from Myanmar for modern electronics and motorcycles. This barter practice reflects the distinctive commerce culture of this border region.
