Lopburi, Province in central Thailand
Lopburi is an administrative unit in the central part of the country, positioned between two rivers and the mountains to the north. The terrain shifts between flat plains in the river valleys and forested hills at the edge of the mountain range.
The region served as a second capital in 1666 under King Narai, who moved his government here when the kingdom's former center faced threats. This decision shaped the architecture and brought European influences through diplomatic contacts to the area.
The name Lavo predates the current administrative structure and still appears in many local place names today. Visitors can see numerous temples in Khmer style that shape daily life and are used by residents for religious ceremonies.
A railway station in the main town connects the region via the northern line to the capital, while the main road Route 1 runs through the center. Exploring is best organized with a combination of public transport and rental vehicles.
Monkeys live freely in the streets of the provincial capital and have grown accustomed to human presence, leading to regular close encounters. In November, a festival takes place where the animals are fed fruits and rice, a tradition that draws tourists from across the country.
