Cuei Pond, Glacial lake in Shei-Pa National Park, Taiwan
Cuei Pond is a small alpine lake in Shei-Pa National Park situated at approximately 3,500 meters elevation. The water body spans less than 30 meters across and holds the distinction of being Taiwan's highest glacial lake.
A small earth god temple once occupied a site next to the lake but was relocated to lower elevation as a forest fire prevention measure. This reflects how human presence in high mountains has been adapted over time.
The pond area holds significance within Shei-Pa National Park's network of hiking trails, connecting visitors to Taiwan's mountainous heritage.
Reaching the lake requires a three-day trek covering approximately 25 kilometers with elevation changes of about 2,400 meters through difficult mountain terrain. Visitors should be physically prepared and experienced in high-altitude hiking before undertaking this journey.
A shelter hut next to the lake accommodates about 12 people indoors, with space for roughly 20 additional visitors in the nearby camping area. These simple lodging options allow trekkers to stay overnight at this remote high-altitude location.
