Wuling National Forest Recreation Area, National Forest Recreation Area in Heping District, Taiwan.
Wuling National Forest Recreation Area is a forested mountain zone at around 1800 meters elevation with old-growth fir and hemlock stands. The terrain features several hiking and observation trails from which visitors can see the landscape and wildlife.
The protected zone was created to preserve rare native tree and animal species from logging. This decision was a key step in Taiwan's environmental protection and set standards for other protected areas.
Indigenous communities have maintained traditional forest management practices that continue to shape how the area is cared for today. Visitors can learn about this relationship between people and nature at several information points throughout the grounds.
Visitors reach the area via National Freeway 6 at the Puli exit or by bus from Yilan and Luodong. It is wise to bring sturdy shoes and weatherproof clothing, as mountain conditions can change quickly.
The Qijiawan creek is home to Formosan landlocked salmon, a rare fish found only in this region, visible from observation points. This population is small and shows how important the protected zone is for keeping this species alive.
